Elders

This Sunday is the last day to submit the names of any men that you believe meet the qualifications of elders and could serve the congregation in this capacity.

Below is a list of the qualifications of elders as found in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. We ask that you study these thoroughly and consider these qualifications as you submit names. We ask that names be submitted in writing.

Please submit any names to Jim Treece, Clarence Riggenbach or Jim Dougan.

We ask that all names be submitted by March 26th. (This Sunday)

After the names are submitted - the men whose names are submitted, will be contacted as to whether they would desire to serve in this capacity. The names of those who would be willing to serve and are scripturally qualified would then be placed before the congregation again—to allow time to see if there are any scriptural objections to someone serving as an elder.

Following the above procedures, if there are men who are scripturally qualified and willing to serve as elders, a date will be set for their formal appointment as elders of the church of Christ of Venice.

It's Just Not Worth It

Have you ever come to the conclusion that certain things are "just not worth it"? Rather than drive all night long to reach a destination, you stop and sleep for a while before continuing your trip. "It's just not worth it" to risk having an accident due to fatigue. The consequences are too great.

Consider some other things that the Bible makes clear are "just not worth it" due to the consequences involved.

"It's just not worth it ...

To be unforgiving, for "if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses" (Matthew 6:15).

To go beyond the teaching of Christ, for "whosoever goeth onward and abideth not in the teaching of Christ, hath not God" (2 John 9).

To refuse to repent of sins, for Jesus said, "I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all in like manner perish" (Luke 13:3).

To be a friend of the world, for "whosoever therefore would be a friend of the world maketh himself an enemy of God" (James 4:4).

To form close relationships with evil people, for "evil companionships corrupt good morals" (I Corinthians 15:33).

To sow to the flesh, for "he that soweth unto his own flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption" (Galatians 6:8).

To be unmerciful, for "judgment is without mercy to him that hath showed no mercy: mercy glorieth against judgment" (James 2:13).

To fail to obey the gospel, for those who "obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus ... shall suffer punishment, even eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of his might" (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9).
