Volume 10, Number 12

Following our study of the eldership, we asked members of the congregation to submit the names of any men that meet the qualifications of elders and could serve the congregation in this capacity.

Below is a list of the qualifications of elders as found in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. We ask that you study these thoroughly and consider these qualifications as you submit names. We ask that names be submitted in writing.

Please submit any names to Jim Treece, Clarence Riggenbach or Jim Dougan.

We ask that all names be submitted by March 26th. (Next Sunday)

After the names are submitted - the men whose names are submitted, will be contacted as to whether they would desire to serve in this capacity. The names of those who would be willing to serve and are scripturally qualified would then be placed before the congregation again—to allow time to see if there are any scriptural objections to someone serving as an elder.

Following the above procedures, if there are men who are scripturally qualified and willing to serve as elders, a date will be set for their formal appointment as elders of the church of Christ of Venice.

There is an ancient fable about an ant and an elephant crossing a bridge. The bridge shook under the great weight of the elephant, and when the two reached the other side, the ant boastfully exclaimed: “Boy, we sure shook that bridge, didn’t we!”

There is often a strong temptation to claim credit for things that are accomplished with little or no effort on our part.

To exaggerate means to exceed the bounds of truth by overstatement. One of the problems we have as persons is not to think too much of ourselves, nor, too little—but to see ourselves accurately or in an honest light. The apostle Paul said that a man should not “think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly …” (Romans 12:3) It is the way of wisdom to play our part in life, however big or small, and be assured in the eyes of God it is an important role.
