Volume 10, Number 11

Last week, following our study of the eldership, we asked members of the congregation to submit the names of any men that meet the qualifications of elders and could serve the congregation in this capacity.

Below is a list of the qualifications of elders as found in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. We ask that you study these thoroughly and consider these qualifications as you submit names. We ask that names be submitted in writing.

Please submit any names to Jim Treece, Clarence Riggenbach or Jim Dougan.

We ask that all names be submitted by March 26th.

After the names are submitted - the men whose names are submitted, will be contacted as to whether they would desire to serve in this capacity. The names of those who would be willing to serve and are scripturally qualified would then be placed before the congregation again—to allow time to see if there are any scriptural objections to someone serving as an elder.

Following the above procedures, if there are men who are scripturally qualified and willing to serve as elders, a date will be set for their formal appointment as elders of the church of Christ of Venice.

Of Hogs & Men

Once there was a small town that had a herd of wild hogs living in the forest nearby. These hogs detroyed the crops and made a nuisance of themselves. One day, the hogs attacked a small child and the people were enraged. The men of the town tried to hunt the hogs down, but the hogs too wary.

A famous hunter was called to help them. First, he put some corn in a clearing. After several days they noticed the hogs had finally come and eaten the corn. He replaced the corn and the hogs came back. After a while he put fence posts around the corn. In a few days he added the wire ... a few more days and he added the gate. Finally. early one morning he slipped down and closed the gate.

The people were amazed that he had caught the hogs. The hunter shrugged his shoulders and said, "Those hogs were mine the day they ate their first mouthful of corn. You see, when a critter takes a free handout, he belongs to the one who gave it."

This works with people as well as hogs. Through temptation, Satan sets before us "corn" (the seemingly "free" sinful pleasures of this world). He works just like the hunter in the story above - knowing that what works on hogs can work on people too! We need to make sure that we do not trade our spiritual freedom for some "free corn" that will only bring us misery and grief. (Cf. Heb. 11:23-26; 1 Cor. 10:13; Phil. 4:13)
