Thanks to Senior Saints

Qualifications of Elders Elders are selected by the congregation—the whole congregation—but before a man is selected, he must possess all of the Biblical qualifications. If he does not, no amount of “selecting” and “appointing” will make him an elder.

1 Timothy 3:1-7

1. Without reproach.
2. Husband of one wife.
3. Temperate.
4. Sober-minded.
5. Orderly.
6. Given to hospitality.
7. Apt to teach.
8. No brawler.
9. No striker.
10. Gentle.
11. Not contentious.
12. No lover of money.
13. Rules well his own house.
14. Not a novice.
15. Good testimony from without.

Titus 1:5-9

1. Blameless.
2. Husband of one wife.
3. Having children that believe.
4. Not self-willed.
5. Not soon angry.
6. No brawler.
7. No striker.
8. Not greedy of filthy lucre.
9. Given to hospitality.
10. Lover of good.
11. Sober-minded.
12. Just.
13. Holy.
14. Self controlled.
15. Sound in the faith.

A man is made an elder when he possesses all these qualifications, is selected by the church and appointed by an evangelist. He "rules" or oversees the church by teaching and by example. An elder never has "the rule or ruin complex" which would indicate a spirit of haughtiness and pride. To do so would mean he was "lording it over God's heritage" which would disqualify him (1 Peter 5:3). Members of the church should honor and respect their elders - especially those who "labor in word and doctrine" (1 Timothy 5:17) - that is devote their time to preaching.

Real Freedom

Someone once bitterly remarked to Benjamin Franklin that the Constitution of the United States was a delusion: “Where is all the happiness it is supposed to guarantee for us?” Franklin replied to the complaining man and said, “All the Constitution of the United States guarantees, my friend, is the pursuit of happiness. You have to catch up with happiness yourself!”

Some people evidently think all you have to do is sit tight and wait for someone else to provide you with everything. The only rights that we have under the laws of the land is to work for the freedom and peace for which we are all yearning.

To achieve true happiness in life then always remember to respect God in all you do. In the words of the prophet: “He hath showed thee, O man, what is good and what does the Lord require of thee, but to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8)
